Pursue happiness with dilligence
What is your “nightmare vision” pertaining to the modern world?
Is It something similar to the quick-doodle I did yesterday?
is it perhaps similar to a picture painted by this 80s hit tune from Depeche Mode?

It’s a competitive world
Everything counts in large amounts
The graph on the wall
Tells the story of it all
Picture it now
See just how the lies and deceit
Gained a little more power
Confidence taken in by a sun tan and a grin
The grabbing hands
Grab all they can
All for themselves after all

The 80s comments about disillusionment is perpetuated by Tears for Fears.

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head, I wanna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow
And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I’m dying
Are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It’s a very, very mad world, mad world

“Mad World” performed by Tears for Fears and written by Roland Orzabal.
“Everything counts” Performed by Depeche Mode, written by Vince Clarke, Martin Gore

The real nightmare that’s the personification of the modern world is often clean, sterile and looks very calm from a distance.
It is in fact nothing like my doodle in most cases.

Irrespective of what the world “looks like” to me or you I would rather subscribe to the wisdom from another musical snippet.
I love the general approach of the song “The Sparrow” by metal band Mastodon.
The song is mostly instrumental.
There are gentle acoustic opening and closing sections but the middle part is pure no hold barred metal.
The guitar mourns, burns and soars.
The storm is fierce, the energy is all there within a controlled unrelenting maelstrom.
Life celebrated in a virtual explosion of a colourful soundscape.
And lamenting a life that ended to soon.

There’s a single lyric in there:
“Pursue Happiness With Diligence”

“The Sparrow”
The Sparrow’s song is my happiness
A friend that darkness never takes
A remedy to my greatest sadness
And is always there when morning breaks

As it flies through the forest singing
The angelic tune brings comfort to all
A true moment of simplicity rings
Even as the sun again begins to fall

In presence of the Sparrow’s innocence
We will always pursue it with diligence
.

David Leger

This was written about the song:

This somber and contemplative track was written in memory of the wife of the band’s accountant, who passed away from stomach cancer during the recording of the album. The song’s only lyrics, “pursue happiness, with diligence,” were her motto. Drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor told Kerrang!: “It was one of the last things we recorded and it only really came together in the studio.”
(Writer(s): Troy Jayson Sanders, Brann Timothy Dailor, William Brent Hinds, William Breen Kelliher)

Perhaps this idea about the world we live in is all about perspective.

If you need to pursue happiness you might need to be braver, even bolder, laugh more, don’t overthink… fly a little higher than you normally would.
Easy? No.
Essential? I think so…

Have a great Thursday… a happy one.
